Binge-watching ended a decades-old tradition. Since they have the possibility of watching a season in one go, spectators must be satisfied with a single recap per burst of episodes, and thus not weaken when they stop suddenly and for a long period of time. Prime Video's new feature, called X-Ray Recaps, aims to replace the history “previously in…”. The AI could thus create brief, easy-to-access summaries of individual episodes and even parts of the episode. Amazon explains in a press release: “Prime Video’s product and technology teams work tirelessly behind the scenes to improve customers’ viewing experiences. With the creation of X-Ray Recaps, we directly address a common problem customers face when streaming content: they forget where they left off.”
Thanks to machine learningX-Ray Recaps will be able to adapt to the needs of its users and encourage split viewing. As reported End gadgetPrime Video traffic “of short textual extracts key cliffhangers, character-driven plot points”. Good news, he is trained to avoid spoilers. The tool is powered by Amazon Bedrock, a generative AI tool offered by AWS. It must be said that unlike its direct competitors, Prime Video benefits from the experience of the group's subsidiaries in terms of new technologies. Amazon Web Service is a strong force on which the platform can rely. Its affiliation with IMDB already allowed it to offer one of the best features in the streaming landscape: information on casting, music and anecdotes.
Note that this is not the first time that AI has been used on Prime Video. In April 2023, it was used, for example, to develop a functionality for make dialogues more audible and avoid constantly playing with the volume. Thanks to AI, the sound of the replicas was amplified in the most critical moments. For now, X-Ray Recaps is available to Fire TV customers only and in beta. As is often the case, the platform tests its tool before offering it to all of its users. Other devices should be able to benefit from it by the end of the year before undoubtedly a deployment during 2025. Only original Prime Video content, such as The Boys or even The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
“In the previous episode”
Artificial intelligence is worrying the film and television industry, Prime Video may well have found the most interesting way to exploit it. A little over a year ago, screenwriters and actors went on strike for several months to make their demands heard in terms of remuneration initially, but also and above all to sound the alarm about the artificial intelligence. As studios and channels took a serious look at the opportunities offered by such tools, unions championed the creation of effective legislation to protect employees and their creations. Intellectual property, remuneration and casualization, Hollywood artisans feared that the progress made in the field would encourage a reduction in positions and budgets allocated to the writing of scenarios or the recruitment of second-rate actors and silhouettes.
Prime Video, which has not openly taken part in experiments in the field, does not have the same approach as its competitors. The Amazon subsidiary takes advantage of these tools to put them at the service of its platform and its functionalities. If Netflix and Disney+ have been singled out for their creative attempts, a short film for the red N and the credits of Secret Invasion for Mickey, Prime Video already seems to be doing well. He still has to perfect the copy, so that X-Ray Recaps becomes part of the habits of customers, who sometimes neglect too much the possibilities offered by Prime Video.
