Apple announced new features for tvOS as part of its tvOS 18 release earlier this year. While tvOS 18 has been publicly available since mid-September, some of the improvements previously presented are expected to be rolled out in upcoming updates. To that end, Apple appears to want to add support for the widened aspect ratio in tvOS 18.2.
Please note that the new minor tvOS update remains in beta for now, having been shown to developers on Monday. Based on current findings, Apple has improved aspect ratio support to include Auto, 16:9, 21:9, 2.37:1, 2.39:1, 2.40:1, DCI 4K, and 32: 9. Ultimately, the 16:9 format will probably be the most used.
That being said, the new aspect ratios on offer could come in handy for those looking to connect an Apple TV 4K (currently $149.99 at Amazon) to a projector or ultra-wide monitor. Currently, tvOS 18.2 is scheduled for public release in December. As with tvOS 18 itself, the new update will be compatible with Apple televisions released from 2015 onwards.
