The first version of ChatGPT, with only a chatbot interface and limited knowledge of training data was already a threat to Google. But now, OpenAI offers a new product called ChatGPT search. Announced on October 31, ChatGPT search is a mix of AI chatbots and search engines, which will allow you to find information from the web, on ChatGPT. In other words, thanks to this feature, ChatGPT becomes a direct competitor to Google's search engine.
“ChatGPT can now search the web much more efficiently than before. You can get quick and timely answers with links to relevant web sources, which previously required going to a search engine”we can read in the announcement of this new feature. And to make it easy to access on Google Chrome, OpenAI has even published an extension that allows you to replace Google with ChatGPT search on the browser's address bar.
By default, when you enter a keyword into Chrome's address bar, you are redirected to Google search results. However, if you install the ChatGPT search extension, your searches will be performed on ChatGPT. Those who want to use ChatGPT search instead of Google will no longer need to open the ChatGPT website or application to find answers on ChatGPT search.

A feature whose access is still reserved for paying users (and users on the waiting list)
Currently, OpenAI's Chrome extension already has over 200,000 users. However, it is important to clarify that ChatGPT search is not available to all ChatGPT users. For the moment, access to this Google competitor is reserved for users of paid ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Team subscriptions, as well as people who have registered on the OpenAI waiting list. However, the company has already announced that ChatGPT search will also be offered to users of the free version later.
Google: the response is already being deployed
For its part, Google has developed a feature called AI Overview, which offers responses generated by generative AI, and a chatbot-type experience, in response to certain user queries. And recently, Google announced the deployment of this feature in more than 100 countries. But at the moment, the list of affected countries does not include European Union countries (probably because Google still needs to ensure compliance with EU rules).
- OpenAI launched ChatGPT search, a product that allows you to search the web, like Google
- And it also offers a Chrome extension which allows you to replace Google with ChatGPT search on the address bar
- But, at the moment, ChatGPT search is only available to users of the paid version of ChatGPT and those who have registered on the OpenAI waitlist
