Little by little, Google Pixels are grabbing market share

It will be no secret that Google only has a small fraction of the smartphone market, compared to the giants Samsung & Apple. However, this year, the American firm seems to stand out a little more, gaining a little ground on the sales side, in particular thanks to a Pixel 9 range which seems to be meeting its audience. The Counterpoints site thus offers a report on smartphone sales for the third quarter of 2024, and the figures are rather good for Google in North America.

First of all, it is important to return to the most important figure: Apple represents 54% of smartphones sold during this quarter, compared to 22% for Samsung and 13% for Motorola. In other words, Google is still far from being one of the three major players in the market. However, the firm is getting closer little by little: 4% of smartphones sold in the USA come from the firm, which represents the company's record so far. This figure is also explained by the early arrival of the Pixel 9 (they were marketed on August 13), which allowed the firm to take better advantage of these new sales during the quarter.

On the other hand, the Counterpoints site reveals that the Pixel 9 Pro XL is one of the 10 best-selling premium smartphone models (over $800) over the period. This confirms the fact that many consumers are still looking to get large models. On the other hand, since the Pixel 9 range offers 4 different models (compared to the 2 Pixel 8 models), the addition of new choices probably played a role in this good performance from Google. But inevitably, faced with the hegemony of Apple and Samsung, Google still remains a minor player in the market. Until next year, maybe?
