RCS (Rich Communication Services), widely used on Android, will become available on iPhone for Free Mobile and Bouygues Telecom subscribers. The new beta of iOS 18.2 finally supports this technology for both operators.
Currently only available for SFR subscribers with an iPhone, RCS has just been activated for Free Mobile and Bouygues Telecom subscribers in a new update of the operator bundle available under beta 2 of iOS 18.2
For those unfamiliar with the term, a carrier bundle update is a mobile carrier-specific update to improve network features and connection settings on iOS devices . The new general public version 18.2 should be deployed rather than planned, at the beginning of December according to projections, this is when all subscribers of the two operators will be able to benefit from RCS on iPhone, Orange is not concerned for the moment, but a new beta 3 could still integrate it before the deployment of the final version.
Concretely, RCS messages will be sent like old SMS with green bubbles but the type of message will be indicated in the text entry field (iMessage, RCS or SMS). This technology, finally introduced by Apple in iOS 18, allows advanced messaging features such as file sharing, video calls and group chats. On the Free Mobile side, the only thing missing is support for 5G SA on iPhones, we will still have to wait.
