There is change in the air for Google Maps since from December 1, the application will modify its operation in terms of management of location data which will be stored locally. Until now, they are saved in the cloud.
History will be stored locally
You therefore have until this date to save your travel history if you do not want to lose it. If the Mountain View firm opts for local storage, it is with the aim of “enhance confidentiality” as it announced in December 2023. Several decisions have already been taken in this direction, such as the removal of sensitive places from the history (associations for victims of domestic violence, abortion clinics, etc.).

Google indicates that you have until December 1 to record this location data yourself on your smartphone, for example. After this date, the company will automatically transfer the last 90 days of travel history to the first device you log in to. Data older than three months will be deleted.
For the moment, French users have not received this information email from Google. This is a new change for the service which no longer appears by default on the company’s search engine following the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
