Intel's Arrow Lake would be a commercial failure: it's too expensive

The figures are relentless: Intel's new Arrow Lake processors are not attractive. Between mixed performances and high prices, the Santa Clara giant seems to have missed the boat.

The data is clear: according to figures published by Mindfactoryone of the largest European resellers of computer components, the Core Ultra 9 285K has only sold around ten copies.

AMD's dominance in this segment is overwhelming: nearly 95% of desktop PC processors recently sold come from Intel's direct competitor. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D, in particular, is at the top of sales, establishing itself as the essential reference for demanding gamers. The latter has just been renewed.

The reasons for an announced failure

The commercial failure of Arrow Lake can be explained by several intertwining factors. First of all, the Core Ultra 9 285K's performance was disappointing in testing.

Although energy consumption is improving, performance gains remain marginal, or even non-existent in certain games. This situation is all the more problematic as the processor is marketed at a particularly high price of 650 euros.

This pricing positioning comes up against a market reality: AMD solutions offer similar, or even better, performance at a significantly lower cost.

The real cost of adopting Arrow Lake is not limited to the processor alone. You'll also have to invest in a new motherboard and potentially new RAM, which will add significantly to the final bill.

Faced with these constraints, competition from AMD, and particularly from the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, appears even more formidable. The latter has established itself as the absolute benchmark in gaming, offering a more coherent package both in terms of performance and value for money.
