If Silent Hill 2 is being talked about at the moment, it’s not necessarily for the right reasons. If its presentation during Sony’s State of Play was not unanimous, it seems that players are annoyed at having several versions of the game.
The fog is having trouble lifting around Silent Hill 2
The Silent Hill 2 remake has been revealed again, and once again, it has angered players. While fans had already pointed the finger at the character design or the action phases, this time, it was the different versions of the game that were the subject of criticism. As we learned during Silent Hill Transmission (broadcast just after PlayStation’s State of Play), Konami’s title will have two editions: the standard edition and the deluxe edition, note that only the standard edition ( without pre-order) is available in physical format. The deluxe edition does not offer any physical product, such as a figurine for example, the bonuses of the most expensive versions are digital and are only in-game cosmetics and a digital artbook.
Faced with the announcement of these editions, the reactions of players are varied, it seems that they were not unanimous. Some return to the direction that Konami, the studio behind the franchise, is taking, others do not like the idea of a 48-hour early access available in the deluxe edition for pre-order and are calling for a boycott of some versions of the game. If the cosmetics offered by the standard edition (under pre-order) and the higher versions do not annoy players, it is not the same thing regarding the possibility of playing the title two days before its official release, and, the fans do not hesitate to show their dissatisfaction.
I never liked the way video game companies today let you play the game early if you pay extra. I don’t care about cosmetics for a single player game. I care that guys who buy the deluxe editions can play the game earlier than others – A Reddit user reacting to the game’s editions.
Many seem pessimistic about the future of Silent Hill 2 even though the game has not yet been released, probably because players do not want to see their favorite game fall into disgrace due to a poor adaptation of the original game.
A difficult launch?
Player reactions do not suggest a complicated future for the remake of the cult psychological horror game. Considered a masterpiece of the genre, player expectations are enormous and this could be a double-edged sword for Bloober Team, the studio in charge of Konami’s remake. The Polish studio has already shown that it is capable of accomplishing great things in the horror genre, notably thanks to Layers of Fear. It will probably be the same for Silent Hill 2, which is already being compared today to other remakes like the recent Resident Evil.
For the moment, the few trailers released are not representative of the overall experience that the title will offer. Especially since the original game shines in particular by its narration and its atmosphere, and not by the nervousness of its fights, which have already caused a lot of noise among the fan community, complaining that the game tried to lean towards the aspect survival horror. We can only wait for the game’s release, announced for October 8, 2024, to find out more about what it will have in store for us.
