After the controversy caused by Helldivers II, Sony is now acting cautiously by specifying the need to create a Playstation Network account to be able to access these games ported to PC. This is particularly the case with God of War Ragnarök, which is nevertheless a single-player game…

The PSN account of discord

At the beginning of last May, Sony found itself under fire after wanting to implement a requirement to connect to the Playstation Network to be able to play Helldiverse II. A controversy which quickly grew and which had several consequences for the game and the previous opus, before Sony reversed course.

Beyond the refusal of users to communicate their personal information to a company like Sony, one of the main causes of the annoyance of players was that Helldivers II was originally sold in territories that did not access to the Playstation Network. The potential implementation of this mandatory connection would therefore have prevented certain players from accessing the game.

Now that this controversy has passed, Sony seems to want to avoid a new backlash by systematically specifying the need for a PSN account for access to the game. This was the case, for example, for the PC port of Ghost of Tsushima, which requires an account. Playstation Network for access to its online game mode, Legends. And this will also be the case for God of War: Ragnarokwhich is nevertheless an exclusively solo game.

The Ragnarök that tears the players apart

In the same way as Ghost of Tsushima, the PC port of God of War Ragnarök will require connection to a Playstation Network account, as Sony clarified on the game’s Steam page three months before its release. But unlike previous software concerned by this prerequisite, God of War Ragnarök is an essentially single-player video game experience. With the exception of statistical data, we therefore wonder why Sony is asking for this connection here, which inevitably poses a problem for thousands, even millions of players. In the case of Ghost of Tsushima, the entire single-player campaign remains accessible without the need to connect to a PSN account. Sony’s choice is therefore questionable here.
