Finishes as exemplary as ever
For its MacBook Air 15 M3, Apple has not opted for a revolutionary design change since this ultraportable is simply identical to its predecessor, the MacBook Air M2. We thus find the same chassis, the same slightly unsightly notch that we had already little appreciated on the previous model, as well as the same weight of 1.51 kg. It is certainly not the lightest ultraportable, but the MacBook Air 15 M3 remains a very compact laptop that can easily be transported. Overall, we are treated to a very well designed ultraportable, which benefits from exemplary finishes as Apple knows how to do.
In terms of the screen, the Cupertino company has opted for a 15.3-inch LCD panel. If it offers, as always, beautiful brightness, beautiful contrasts and realistic colors, we regret that the brand has still not focused on OLED, a technology that it reserves for future MacBook Pros. We console ourselves with this beautiful diagonal which provides significant working comfort: for example, we can work with two windows side by side without feeling cramped. And if that’s still not enough for you, know that the MacBook Air 15 M3 can be connected to two external screens, compared to just one for the M2.
Increased performance
The centerpiece of this MacBook Air 15 M3 is written in its name: it is of course this very powerful M3 chip that it contains. During our test, we noticed good progress compared to the M2, particularly on the graphics part which shows an evolution of almost 75% between the MacBook Air M2 and M3. In creative applications like Photoshop, the MacBook Air M3 remains robust, much more robust than the M2 model, especially when accelerated by the GPU. Note, however, that the MacBook Air, ideal for work and office use, is less powerful than the MacBook Pro, which is aimed more at more demanding people who need to carry out very resource-intensive tasks.
Otherwise, a 512 GB SSD completes the package and has even been improved compared to the previous generation thanks in particular to the addition of a second NAND memory chip which allows you to benefit from higher speeds. Finally, on the autonomy side, Apple promises up to 18 hours of autonomy in video playback and 15 hours when browsing the Internet via Wi-Fi. During our test, the machine survived a day and a half before dropping below the 10% for typical work use (office, browsing, video playback, file sending, etc.). It’s very reassuring. In terms of charging, two hours will be necessary to get the machine back to 100% with the compact 30 W charger.
