Hades 2 has been available since May 6 in early access on PC. The content offered by Supergiant Games is already up to par, with hours and hours of fun in store. Sequel to one of the best games of recent years, Hades 2 offers a familiar feeling, but brings its share of new features to renew the experience.
In this sequel (which does not require having played the previous game), you play as Mélinoé, the princess of the Underworld. As a witch, she has access to a huge cauldron between attempts to eliminate Kronos, the titan of time. This element allows you to integrate a crafting mechanic into Hades 2, absent from the first opus. The container makes the gameplay a little more complex and the way in which you can personalize your adventure.
What is this huge cauldron for? Hades 2 ?
When you’re going to die for the first time in Hades 2 (which happens quite quickly), you will find yourself in an area called the Crossroads, somewhere between the underworld and the surface. There you will come across a huge cauldron with which you will not be able to interact right away. You will still have to die.
This cauldron is not placed there by chance. This is a powerful tool in Mélinoé’s toolbox, who fully accepts her status as a witch. Thus, the cauldron allows you to perform incantations, provided you have the necessary resources. Recipes can be of different types: some add options from merchants, others take the form of permanent improvements for each attempt. Incantations are therefore essential to succeed in Hades 2.
During the various outings into the depths, we can collect various ingredients. There are reagents, such as silver, limestone or even bronze. There are also seeds and plants. Resources require tools to be obtained (example: you will need a pickaxe to mine) while, later, you can sow seeds in a small garden provided for this purpose.
We quickly understand the idea: we stock up on resources to unlock the first incantations, which then open the door to other options to collect other resources for ever more incantations. There is therefore a notion of micromanagement in Hades 2. There are even subtleties to consider: you can only embark on an attempt with one tool on you, meaning that you will not be able to obtain all types of resources each time.
Crafting isn’t just about incantations. It is also used to unlock weapons. It is intended to be an essential pillar of progression in the game. Note that the developers have thought of integrating a reminder to keep the recipes in mind.
