Google Pixel 8a: what to expect from the future number 1 of inexpensive photophones?

The Google Pixel 8 range was marked by a sharp increase in prices from which the Pixel 8a unfortunately could not escape, but we also learned some good news such as the duration of updates which will reach 7 years like the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. The Google Pixel 8a is thus the first mid-range smartphone to benefit from such long software monitoring, and therefore potentially the most durable smartphone in its price bracket.

To start with the technical sheet, the design changes very little and is closer to the Pixel 8 with rounded corners and a pill-shaped photo module. Ditto for the screen which benefits from a diagonal of 6.1 inches with an OLED panel in FHD+ definition, but a new feature is more than welcome: a refresh rate of 120 Hz. As for the autonomy, it is slightly increase thanks to a larger battery of around 13%.

We now know that the Google Pixel 8a will be based on the Google Tensor G3, but this smartphone will above all be expected in the photo. The Google Pixel 7a amazed us and we expect it to be the same here. Moreover, the Pixel 8a would feature the same photo configuration as its predecessor, namely two Sony sensors, a 64 Mpx main and a 13 Mpx ultra wide-angle. And with the Google Tensor G3, we can expect better software image processing.

Finally, the Google Pixel 8a will indeed benefit from a major new feature compared to the Pixel 7 range: an on-board AI, Gemini Nano which brings together several artificial intelligence features, like Galaxy AI on the latest Samsung Galaxy. But it won’t be right away. It is currently only available on the Google Pixel 8 Pro and should soon arrive on the Pixel 8 and 8a during a Feature Drop update. We will undoubtedly have more details on May 14 during Google I/O.
