Test – Gigantic: an unconvincing return

Released in 2017 on PC and consoles, Gigantic received a rather mixed reception. Despite being free, the title from the Motiga studio had to bow out relatively quickly. To everyone’s surprise, here it is back in 2024 in a paid version.

We’re not going to lie to you, it’s rather rare to see a game removed from sale come back a few years later. Furthermore, the few rare exceptions have rather followed the opposite route, moving from a paid formula to a free-to-play formula. Gigantic: Rampage Edition therefore swims against the tide. And it’s not much saying.

Already at the time of its release, in 2017, Motiga’s title had moderately excited the public. The game stood out from other MOBAs by its significantly different concept since the player had to score points to allow his goalkeeper to attack the goalkeeper of the enemy team. It thus operated on a system of offensive, counter-offensive and objective control.

Gigantic’s graphic style gives it a certain personality.

But in practice, how does it work? Two teams of 5 players compete on a small map. Their objective is simple: maintain control of areas for a few seconds to score points, which, when added together, will allow them to “unleash” their guardian, a gigantic creature, on the opposing camp. Of course it’s not that easy since the other team is fighting to control the same strategic points. Once the creature is released, the team that won the standoff attacks the enemy guardian and attempts to remove as much life as possible while the enemy attempts to stop the attack. And so on until one of the two guardians is destroyed.

To win the game, you will have to control these points.

The concept is nice and emphasizes cooperation between players. To win the game, you will have to be effective in teamwork. The different classes are thus very complementary. The problem is that despite the expanded cast (25 heroes including 2 new ones), we quickly go in circles in this game, with its extremely repetitive concept. After passing the 20-game mark, we even honestly feel like we’ve been through it all.

Another major flaw of the game: its community. The paid model is not very successful because it was very difficult for us to play a game online… Outside of certain time slots, it even seems impossible, even if the game is cross-play. Of course, it is possible to play it alone against bots, but the AI is catastrophic and the game is not really pleasant…

Loading times are very long.

And then there is the question of finishing. Loading times are numerous and above all very long. Worse, we were disconnected twice.

On the other hand, the studio took care to deliver a full version with new content (2 heroes and 2 maps), some new features including cross play, a new simplified “Rush” game mode and the promise of some new features. free including skins and a game mode in a few weeks. We therefore feel a real desire from the developers to take care of the release of the game.

Technically, Gigantic has also not aged too badly thanks to its animated style. The game remains “pretty” and stylish, with its graphic style. The mechanisms, however, have aged quite a bit… Not sure that young audiences will fall for this rather retro formula and this economic model which was nevertheless a really good idea.

Conclusion

Released in 2017, Gigantic failed to achieve success. This free-to-play MOBA returns to us today in a paid “premium” version. The idea is good, especially since the developers have added some new features including 2 new heroes, 2 new maps, 1 new game mode and cross-play, but in practice, it is very difficult to play it as the community is small… In other words, you risk buying this game and never playing it… The concept of the title has also aged, despite the introduction of a “simplified” game mode. Not sure that the public will be receptive to this proposal.
