BMW Motorrad switches to automatic clutch

The German manufacturer unveils the Automated Shift Assistant (ASA)

A system allowing manual and automatic gear changing

Clearly, automatic clutches seem to be popular since after the launch of the E-Clutch by Honda on the CB650R and CBR650R, but also the patent filed by Yamaha, it is now BMW Motorrad’s turn to unveil a new technical solution to simplify gear shifting on a motorcycle.

L’Automated Shift Assistant, or ASA for short, therefore symbolizes the latest technological evolution introduced by BMW on its motorcycles. In idea, the ASA promises to allow manual gear changing while adding the possibility of opting for automated gear shifting.

The device is designed around two electromechanical actuators which automate the clutch and gear change of the six-speed transmission. It is therefore no longer necessary to use a lever to operate the clutch. The starting and stopping phases and maneuvers are simplified by this assistance.

The ASA operates using two electromechanical actuators

Different modes allow you to adjust the operation of the ASA. In M mode, gear changes are always done by foot according to the driver’s choices. In D mode, gear changes are entirely managed by the on-board electronics, so all you have to do is turn the right handle and concentrate on driving it.

BMW Motorrad ensures that the jerks associated with gear changes are significantly reduced compared to a conventional clutch and that downshifts are carried out in such a way as to minimize disturbances.

For the moment, the ASA has been planned to be installed as an option on the boxer of the R 1300 GS. The other 1300s to come should also benefit from it. However, nothing has been specified for other models possibly equipped in the future. It should arrive in the second part of the year at around 1,000 euros.
