For years, video games and cinema have been a give-and-take: our favorite medium has been influenced by the seventh art, and sometimes, films themselves pay homage to titles.

Last year, we had the opportunity to interview Chad Stahelski, director of John Wick 4 (but also the other three episodes). A fourth part which once again received praise from the press and the public in addition to bringing in a nice jackpot at the box office! But, did you know that a scene was inspired by a video game? This is The Hong Kong Massacre, a twin-stick shooter released in 2019. “It was a very interesting game that used color very well,” confided Stahelski. Except that this Hong Kong Massacre is itself inspired by another video game available on the PS Plus.

Take turns

Fans of action games have already understood what it is about, with its gunfights frantic and his “top down” camera, The Hong Kong Massacre immediately brings to mind Hotline Miamithe classic from the Dennaton Games studio (made up of only 2 developers) and Devolver Digital. In the 2010s, this title caused a sensation, becoming a classic of the independent scene like FEZ or Limbo. It has particularly nervous and intense action scenes, where the massacre turns into amphetamine-induced delirium thanks to a screaming soundtrack and artistic direction… The first episode also sets up a fairly innovative “moral” for the era, where the player himself is questioned about the deadly missions he undertakes. In fact, before each carnage, a simple phone call details the procedure to follow.

It’s available in PS Plus

If all that interests you, Hotline Miami and its sequel, Hotline Miami 2 Wrong Number (often considered less memorable), are available in the PS Plus game catalog. The latter is included in the Extra and Premium subscriptions on PS4 and PS5 (not in the Essential). On the other hand, if it’s The Kong Massacre that interests you, the title is available on PlayStation for €16.99. It is, however, recognized as less successful than the two Hotline Miami.
