An excellent camera phone, far from being without flaws
Google is recognized for the photographic capabilities of its smartphones and the Pixel 8a is no exception. It has the same configuration as its predecessor with a 64 Mpx wide-angle main sensor, a 13 Mpx ultra-wide-angle sensor and a 13 Mpx front sensor. The added value here lies in image processing, and the Tensor G3 works wonders! The photos are detailed, with accurate colorimetry, and the x8 digital zoom is stunning. Only night and portrait modes pose some difficulties, but nothing that really detracts from the experience.
This generation does not bring any real improvement in the autonomy section, which was already lacking in the previous model. It is capable of lasting a little more than a day of battery life with typical use, but it lacks peace of mind for more active use. As for charging, it is much too slow compared to the competition, with only 18 Watts.
The little brother of the Pixel 8 has nothing to be ashamed of
Aesthetically speaking, the Pixel 8a is clearly rounded and offers a more comfortable grip than the 7a. It is as thin, or even thinner, than a Pixel 8, and has beautiful finishes despite its plastic back which has the good taste of being matte. The evolution continues at the front, with the move to 120 Hz for exemplary fluidity. Its well-calibrated FHD+ Oled screen is pleasant to view, even outdoors.
Let’s finish with the performances, which was a nice surprise. Following our benchmarks, the Tensor G3 of the Pixel 8a is as fast as that of its predecessor! Remember, however, that these smartphones are not looking for the best performance, but it is comfortable in all tasks and above all takes advantage of Google’s optimizations to work perfectly with Android. But the most interesting is the software aspect: 7 years of updates, the AI functions of Google and Gemini Nano.
