Google Chrome will allow you to block spam

Chrome for Windows strengthens its security by tackling spam. Now the browser’s Safety Check tool warns when a website sends you incessant notifications so you can block them.

Google is doing everything possible to improve the security of its Chrome browser and is multiplying updates to move in this direction. Thus, it got rid of third-party cookies, integrated a service, called IP Protection, allowing the IP address of the device to be hidden without using a VPN, and finally deletes the data connected in Incognito mode (see our article) . The Mountain View firm clearly does not intend to stop there and has decided to improve its Security Check tool – it allows you to check the security of different passwords, and to alert you about browser updates, presence of malicious extensions and whether the permissions requested by a site require your attention. This was already entitled to several new features last December, allowing it to automatically warn when one of your passwords is compromised or one of your extensions is removed from the Chrome Store for security reasons. Now, as spotted by Windows Latest, it will also notify you when a website or media app sends spam notifications to the browser, especially if you don’t interact with them.

Safety Check: the end of unwanted push notifications

The notification will tell you “Found X sites with many notifications” in the menu. If you click on this warning, you will be taken to a page where you can choose whether or not to block these notifications. To do this, go to the “Security recommendations” section, where you will find the list of problematic applications – like Instagram for example. Simply click “Block All” to block all websites that send too many push notifications. If you want to block specific websites, click the “Block” button next to their name. Note that Google Chrome has a section that lists actions, such as revoking location permissions.

This completes the Safety Check range. As a reminder, in addition to these new features, the tool ensures safer browsing and protects your data thanks to several functions:

  • it alerts you to compromised passwords;
  • it reminds you to check your settings to protect yourself from malware and scams;
  • it suggests you update your browser to make sure you have the latest security features;
  • it automatically removes permissions for sites you no longer visit;
  • it alerts you to add-ons (extensions) that may be dangerous.

By following its recommendations and performing regular Chrome updates to close security vulnerabilities, you should be able to surf the Internet more securely, limiting the risks.
