That’s why “Joker 2” is called “Joker: Folie À Deux”: The title of the sequel explains – Kino News

The sequel to the DC mega-hit “Joker” comes with a rather unwieldy title that will leave many scratching their heads. We’ll tell you what’s behind the “Folie à deux” and why the whole thing fits so well with the sequel.

Warner Bros.

There are a lot of things that are extraordinary about “Joker 2”. Not only did director Todd Phillipps decide to turn his continuation of 2019’s billion-dollar hit into a mix of musical romance and courtroom drama that subverts all sorts of expectations that one might have after Part 1. He also gave the whole thing a rather unwieldy and anything but self-explanatory subtitle, which will certainly raise questions for many people.

We want to turn these into exclamation points for you and explain what the title of “Joker: Folie À Deux“because now it has to do with it.

Madness for two: This is a foil à deux

The term Folie à deux comes from psychology and translated from French means something like madness or mental disorder in pairs. The technical German equivalent is induced delusional disorder. This will describes a phenomenon in which the delusional symptoms of a sick person are transferred in whole or in part to a close person.

Even though descriptions of such disorders go back to the 17th century, they were only given the term in 1877 by the French physicians Ernest-Charles Lasègue and Jules Farlet Folie à deux described in more detail. This gives rise to the French term that is still used today for this interrelationship between psychological illnesses of people who are close to one another.

Die Folie à deux in “Joker 2”

With this theoretical background in mind, the title of the “Joker” sequel is of course a perfect fit. Ultimately, the focus here is on the relationship between the Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) and Harley Quinzel (Lady Gaga) – better known in the DC world as Harley Quinn. And this is already evident in numerous DC stories by the fact that the two have an extremely toxic relationship characterized by mutual madness. In fact, in her origin story, Harley Quinn, who initially appears as the Joker’s psychologist, essentially let herself be “infected” by her patient and his madness and in the process fell for him.

This doctor-patient relationship is not used in “Joker: Folie À Deux”. For that The two lovers plunge together into an imagined musical world in which they perform all sorts of duets and thus celebrate their madness as a couple, each other Folie à deux surrender.

You can now find out how they do this on the big screen: “Joker 2: Folie À Deux” will be showing in German cinemas from today, October 3, 2024. To get you in the mood, we have the trailer for you here again:
