In parts of the Mittelland, Central Switzerland and the canton of Zurich, hail is falling and streets are flooded.
thoseAfter another heatwave, the weather in Switzerland changed on the first day of September and erupted in violent thunderstorms. Parts of the Mittelland, central Switzerland and the canton of Zurich were affected.
Meteoschweiz had issued thunderstorm warnings of level 4 out of 5 for these areas on Sunday evening. In fact, the storm brought hail in both the cantons of Bern and Zurich and led to isolated trees being uprooted.
There were flooded streets around Zurich, for example in the Islisberg tunnel between Wettswil and Affoltern am Albis, as “20 Minuten” reported. According to Meteoschweiz, the thunderstorms are expected to subside again from midnight.
According to SRF Meteo, August 2024 was the second warmest since measurements began, after 2003. At some locations, such as in Ticino or on the Jungfraujoch, Säntis, Weissfluhjoch or Corvatsch, as well as in some basins, this August was even warmer than any of the previous ones measured.
