Delays in material transport endanger the timely completion of the major construction project on the Titlis. A temporary sheet of material is intended to prevent delays.

By 2029, a new mountain station and a viewing tower will be built on the Titlis above Engelberg. The project by the world-famous architects Herzog & de Meuron is intended to become a “lighthouse” for Swiss tourism (zentralplus reported).

The timely completion of this project is currently on a knife’s edge, as the “Luzerner Zeitung” reports. Norbert Patt, managing director of Titlis Bergbahen, explained to the newspaper that the construction workers had already come to an end this year while transporting the building material up and away. A new cable car should therefore solve the existing problems with material transport.

Material rail could run from spring 2026

The temporary solution would have its valley station behind the driving range of the Engelberg golf course, while the mountain station would be located east of the planned new mountain station. This temporary cable car can carry loads of up to eight tons. “The whole thing will of course be dismantled again after the project is completed,” explains Patt.

It is still unclear whether the railway will actually be implemented. Final clarifications, which are intended to show how much delay would have to be expected without the material web, are currently still ongoing. Because building permit processes can take a long time, the building application has been submitted now. Construction should only take place if it is really necessary.

If necessary, construction of the material web will not start until summer 2025 at the earliest, said Patt. Commissioning would then be in spring 2026. Patt did not want to reveal how much additional costs the material web would cause. However, industry experts assume construction costs between 20 and 30 million francs, according to the article.
