Greta Thunberg arrested at a demonstration in Brussels

Swedish activist Greta Thunberg was arrested at a climate demonstration in Brussels. The 21-year-old took part in a sit-in with around 150 other activists on Saturday afternoon, the Belgian news agency Belga reported. The police took Thunberg away.

More than 100 people were arrested, said a spokesman for the United for Climate Justice (UCJ) campaign. They were released again in the evening. Protesters called for an end to fossil fuel subsidies.

Greta Thunberg has already been temporarily arrested several times. The Swede became known worldwide for her “school strike for the climate”. The international climate movement Fridays for Future emerged from their protest.

Since the Islamist Hamas attack on Israel a year ago and Israel’s subsequent military action in the Gaza Strip, it has repeatedly expressed solidarity with the Palestinians and accused Israel of genocide. Critics also accuse Thunberg of taking one-sided pro-Palestinian positions in the Gaza war and the events that triggered it. At the protest in Brussels she wore a Palestinian scarf. (dpa)
