JT Poston played 62, ten shots under par, to climb alone into the lead of the American Express tournament on Thursday in La Quinta (California).
Played on three courses that golfers will play in rotation between now and Saturday, the American Express is deprived of two of the best players in the world, while Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schaufelle are conspicuous by their absence due to physical problems.
Canadian Nick Taylor continued his good momentum, just a few days after triumphing at the Sony Open in Hawaii for his fifth PGA title.
Taylor made two bogeys, but on the other hand accumulated nine birdies to find himself at minus-7 after 18 holes, three lengths behind Poston.
-The American Express is the third event on the new PGA calendar, and one of the only ones to take place under the Pro-Am format, a holdover from the days when the event was called the Bob Hope Classic.
