Algeria Football– Legendary Dutch footballer Robin van Persie played a key role in preventing his son, Shaqueel, from representing the Moroccan national team, despite his eligibility thanks to his Moroccan mother. This decision, influenced by pressure from the Dutch Football Federation, deprives Morocco of a promising young talent.
For several years, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has increased its efforts to attract players with dual nationality, playing in Europe, in order to strengthen its national teams. Moroccan scouts, scattered across the continent, are actively working to convince these young players to wear the colors of Morocco from a young age.
According to information obtained by the winwin website, the FRMF encountered significant obstacles in its attempt to recruit Feyenoord Rotterdam player Shaqueel van Persie. Although Shaqueel’s mother agreed, expressing support for her son representing Morocco, Robin van Persie reportedly came under significant pressure from senior officials in the Dutch FA. This blockage ultimately led the FRMF to abandon this avenue.
Moroccan strategy in Europe is based on a clear policy: only pursue players showing a clear interest in representing Morocco. In the case of Shaqueel, the lack of clear will on his part and the obstacles posed by his father led the Moroccan recruiters to put an end to their approach.
Shaqueel van Persie, who joined Feyenoord in 2022, recently had his contract extended until June 2028. The young player also has significant experience, having played in the academies of Manchester City and Fenerbahçe. His future looks bright, but for now he will continue to play for the Netherlands.
