Bentancur suspended for racism, Tottenham appeal rejected

Tottenham’s appeal against the seven-match suspension of its player Rodrigo Bentancur, guilty of racist remarks against his teammate Heung-min Son, has been rejected.

The English Association announced on Tuesday that it had rejected Tottenham’s appeal to reduce the sanction of Rodrigo Bentancur, suspended for seven matches in November for comments deemed racist towards his teammate Heung-min Son. “This appeal was rejected following a hearing and the seven-match suspension is maintained as ordered by the regulatory commission”the FA said in a statement.

The Uruguayan midfielder will therefore serve the remainder of his suspension, missing matches against Manchester United in the League Cup and Liverpool in the Premier League. Bentancur was also fined 100,000 pounds sterling (around 121,000 euros).

The standard minimum ban for an offense of this type is six matches, and Spurs have deemed the sanction to be “severe” when they confirmed their intention to appeal on November 20. Bentancur was accused of misconduct for a television interview he gave in his country in June, with the reference to the South Korean origin constituting an aggravating circumstance.

During the show Por la camiseta, the presenter asked him for Son’s jersey, to which Bentancur replied: “Sonny’s jersey? It could be his cousin’s, given that they (meaning Asians) They all look the same.” “He apologized as soon as he returned from vacation”Spurs star striker Heung-min Son said at the end of September.
