Noussair Mazraoui seems to have influence over the decisions of his club, Manchester United. According to the British press, the English club abandoned its project for a jacket in LGBT colors to support the community following the Moroccan international’s refusal to wear it, citing his religious beliefs.
According to The Athletic, this year Manchester United planned to wear a rainbow-colored jacket before their match against Everton, before Noussair Mazraoui objected.
The media claims that the Lion of the Atlas, a practicing Muslim, explained to his teammates that he would not wear this jacket because of his religious beliefs.
As a result, the club decided that no one would wear the jacket, in order to avoid publicly stigmatizing him. This decision would have been taken only a few hours before kick-off.
“Manchester United welcomes fans from all backgrounds, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, and we are strongly committed to the principles of diversity and inclusion. We demonstrate these principles through various activities, including our support of the Rainbow Devils supporters group and campaigns to celebrate our LGBTQ+ fans and combat all forms of discrimination. Players have the right to hold their own opinions, particularly in relation to their faith, even if they sometimes differ from the club’s position. the club said in a statement.
