According to the 2024 index published by the American firm Kearney, it is in 105th place out of 156 cities studied, five places less than in previous years.
This decline is all the more worrying since the white city does not even appear in certain thematic rankings, such as that of “smart cities”. On the other hand, it ranks 137th in the outlook index, which assesses the future potential of cities. A ranking which confirms a downward trend observed since 2019, the year when it occupied 98th position.

Unsurprisingly, it is the giants New York, London, Paris and Tokyo which rise to the top of the table. China is doing well with Beijing (6th) and Shanghai (8th) in the top 10.
In the Arab world, Dubai (24th) leads the way, followed by Doha (51st) and Abu Dhabi (59th). Riyadh, Cairo and Kuwait City bring up the rear.
The Kearney report warns of the environmental challenges facing cities. Climatic disasters, sources of heavy financial and material losses, primarily affect urban areas.
As a reminder, the World Cities Index is based on five criteria: commercial activity, human capital, information exchange, cultural experience and political participation. The objective? Measure the capacity of cities to attract investment, talent and ideas.
