While travel bans are becoming more and more frequent, the Minister of the Interior wants to tighten the screws further. This Sunday, clashes broke out between supporters of Olympique de Marseille and the CRS on the A709. The prefect of Hérault had limited the trip to 450 people, but more than a thousand took the road. The authorities therefore intervened to prevent Olympian supporters from going to Montpellier.
To describe the incident, Bruno Retailleau spoke of “unjustifiable violence” which “sullied the image of football”. He also relied on the homophobic chants chanted at the Parc des Princes during the meeting between Paris Saint-Germain and Strasbourg on Saturday to support his point. “Homophobic chants, clashes between fan clubs, attacks by the police, we can no longer tolerate that every week, sport is the scene of intolerable acts,” he wrote on X.
The minister from the Les Républicains party indicated that he wanted to bring together “football authorities” this week. The objective: “to take the necessary measures to restore order in the stadiums and on the sidelines of matches”. A meeting organized in conjunction with the Minister of Sports Gil Avérous, and the Secretary of State in charge of the fight against discrimination, Othman Nasrou.
