Walid Regragui faces a defensive headache

Injured, the central defender of the Atlas Lions, Chadi Riad, will be absent from the field for three months, which obliges Walid Regragui to find a replacement for him for the next matches counting towards the qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) Morocco 2025.

For the matches against Gabon and Lesotho, played on September 6 and 9, the Moroccan coach lined up Yunis Abdelhamid, a 36-year-old defender playing for Saint-Étienne, and Abdelkabir Abqar, a defender for Deportivo Alavés in Spain.

Clearly not satisfied with their performances during these confrontations, Regragui is considering calling on other players to strengthen the Atlas Lions’ defense during the two matches against the Central African Republic scheduled for October.

According to well-informed sources, the Moroccan coach is studying the possibility of calling up Mehdi Boukamir, who shone with the Moroccan team during the Olympic Games, or Ayman El Wafi, defender of the Swiss club Lugano.

Samy Mmaee, defender of Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb, Jawad El Yamiq, defender of Saudi club Al Wehda, could also make their return to the national team.
