For some time now, Caroline Garcia has been the victim of cyberbullying. A situation that the player from Lyon considers “unacceptable” and she has made it known.

This Wednesday, August 28, she published a post on her Instagram account, bringing together a selection of hate messages that Internet users sent her following her recent defeats, notably her elimination from the US Open this Tuesday.

“You should consider committing suicide”, “I hope your mother dies soon”, “you are a piece of shit” are examples of the several hundred messages she has already received.

“It worries me when I think about the young players who have to go through this.”

The tennis player accompanied her post with a long message in English, deeming the situation unacceptable. “At 30, even if it still hurts, because at the end of the day, I’m just a normal girl who works very hard and does her best, I have tools and I have worked to protect myself from this hatred. But despite everything, it is not acceptable,” she said.

The WTA Top 30 player is alarmed by the rise of cyberbullying on social media and its impact on young athletes. “It really worries me when I think about the young players coming up, who have to go through this. People who haven’t fully developed as humans yet and who could really be affected by this hate,” writes Caroline Garcia.

The tennis player regrets the lack of action on the part of social media platforms and invites Internet users, before sending a hateful message, to remember that athletes “are first and foremost human beings.”
