In brief:
  • Ajoie, Bern twice and Ambri: the LHC swept aside all its opponents last week. The Lions remain in first place in the ranking.
  • Antti Suomela and Théo Rochette, who returned to the game midweek, were decisive in the Vaudois camp.
  • The LHC hosts Langnau on Tuesday and Davos on Friday. Geoff Ward’s side travel to Geneva on Sunday for one final match before the February international break.

It all started nine days ago with an expected victory at home against HC Ajoie (3-0). After two defeats (Fribourg, Bienne), this return to success set the tone for the week to come.

The two duels against Berne, Wednesday in the Federal City (2-3 after extra time) then Friday in Lausanne (5-4 ap), were real tests of character.

The LHC completed its obstacle course on Saturday by overcoming Ambri in Ticino (2-4), all after turning the tide, as it had already done twice before against the Bernese. The Biancoblu led 2-1 in the 49the minute, before Ken JaegerMichael Raffl then Théo Rochette (thirteen seconds from the gong in the empty cage) allow the LHC to bring back three precious units of Léventine.

Sensational turnaround against Bern

The clashes against Berne were, however, the highlights of the Lions’ week, with two overtime victories which left their mark. Wednesday in the Bear’s DenAntti Suomela gave LHC victory in extra time. On Friday, it was in Lausanne that the Lions made a sensational comeback (led 1-4 at mid-match) to win 5-4 thanks to Jason Fuchs’ golden goal.

The returns to play of Suomela and Rochette on Wednesday, both after missing the three previous games, without forgetting also that of Raphael Prassl on January 10, were a catalyst.

Suomela was man of the match in the capital. Rochette earned the title of employee of the weekend with his five personal points, including two goals against the Bears on Friday. Prassl scored against Ajoie and at Ambri.

Three matches before the break

With a team almost complete, Ward can now bring in internal competition. “There’s nothing like pushing each other. At this time of year, it helps us reach our best level,” rejoices the Indomitable Lions guide.

There are now three games left on the program before the international break at the beginning of February. Langnau Tuesday and Davos Friday, each time in Lausanne (7:45 p.m.), then Genève-Servette aux Vernets next Sunday (3:45 p.m.).
