The Canadian escaped last night at the Bell Centre.

The Montreal club managed to come from behind to force overtime and collect an important point in the standings, but they did not play the right way.

Especially not in the defensive zone.

It’s been two games in a row that it’s more difficult on defense and it shows when you think about the fact that the Canadian allowed 45 shots against the Wings (Thursday) and 44 shots against the Devils last night.

89 shots allowed in just two games… It’s too much. You can’t give your opponent that many chances.

That said, we must give credit to Samuel Montembeault and Jakub Dobes because without them, it would have been a massacre.

And that’s when we realize that having two quality goalkeepers really helps.

  • 41 stops for Montembeault in Detroit
  • 40 saves for Dobes yesterday at the Bell Center

Dobes lost his first career NHL game, but he put on a show and kept the Canadian in the game until the end:

It looks like the Canadian is back to his bad habits.

The players may understand that goaltenders are capable of doing the job in front of the net… But they must also find a way to help them.

-

Because obviously Monty and Dobes can’t do everything on their own no matter how good they are.

Martin St-Louis and his group must therefore get to work to prevent this from happening again or to prevent it from becoming more frequent.

The Canadian experienced a lot success in the last weeks because he trusted his system and because he played tight on defense.

We have to get back to that path because if the club continues to allow so many shots to the opponent, defeats will be more frequent than victories by the end of the season.

And with all the clubs fighting for a playoff spot, now is not a good time to go back to being ordinary in the defensive zone.
