The Nogent-sur-Marne intercommunal museum presents the exhibition Willy Ronis: The suburbs are under the eye of the master.
Willy Ronis went for the first time to the banks of Marne in 1938. He photographs the launch of a boat there. This photo incorporates the family album. Then he will then go regularly on site and responds to an order from Figaro in 1947: a report on the taverns and the atmosphere of Sundays by the water. A photograph resulting from this report will remain famous: at Maxe, Joinville where a dancer makes two young women dance at the same time on the terrace of a Guinguette. Other photos of the edges of Marne will be taken on the occasion of the release of a book on the “Iles de Paris”: Willy Ronis photographs the Marne Islands in Créteil, Champigny, Saint-Maur, Nogent, Le Perreux …
Willy Ronis is also interested in film studios: that of Ladislas Starewitch, pioneer of the animated puppet film, in Fontenay-sous Bois. Point of view sends him to capture the atmosphere of the studios of Joinville and Saint-Maurice.
From 1988 to 1991, he spent his weekends in Nogent with his wife La Painter Marie-Anne Lansiaux, who joined the artist’s retirement home. He rides ritually with her and photographs Bry, Chennevières, Joinville and the Polangis district where their favorite bistro is located.
