Head coach Sean McVay was unable to provide an update on quarterback Matthew Stafford’s future with the Los Angeles Rams during his end-of-season press briefing Thursday, but he hope for a quick response.
After the Rams’ second-round playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Stafford said he was going to “take some time to think” about his future. When reporters asked him if he still had the energy to play, he said it seemed like he did.
During the last off-season, the two parties experienced a similar scenario before reaching an agreement on the day the team was to begin training camp.
“We don’t want to go through that again,” says McVay. “It’s not good for anyone. I would like to have more clarity as soon as possible. We must discuss it openly and sincerely.
“There’s a lot of love coming from our side and a lot of appreciation from his side as well. »
McVay also couldn’t say whether Stafford would choose to stay with the Rams if he decides not to retire.
-“We will discuss it at the appropriate time. He plays excellent football. I love him, and I love working with him. He means a lot to our team. »
The coach also spoke about the rib injury that Stafford had to deal with towards the end of the campaign. On Wednesday, Stafford’s wife, Kelly, revealed on her podcast that he cracked four ribs during the game against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 15.
“It continued to annoy him, without affecting his ability to train or play. He is made strong. Players are constantly battling issues throughout a season and overcoming them. »
Stafford completed 65.8% of his passes this season, amassing 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns against 8 interceptions.
