Fabio Coentrao (36 years old) had somewhat disappeared from circulation since the summer of 2021 and his retirement. The former Portuguese international (52 caps, 5 goals) has found the light in recent hours. And he certainly would have been fine without it.
If the man who occupied the left-back position during his storied career has made headlines recently, it’s for the wrong reason. The former Real Madrid player, 106 appearances with the White House, was arrested for illegal possession of a ton of seafood. The Lusitanian stored them at the port of Povoa de Varzim, a municipality located north of Porto.
According to the Spanish daily AS, Fabio Coentrao launched a shellfish business seven months ago. Issue? The former professional footballer, a big fan of fishing, did not have the required license to carry out his activity.
The ex-defender who played for Benfica, Monaco and Sporting ended up getting caught by inspectors from the General Directorate of Natural Resources, Security and Maritime Services (DGRM). During their search, they discovered more than a ton of seafood.
Inside the warehouse there were hundreds of lobsters, shrimp and even spider crabs, distributed in twelve tanks filled with sea water. Some 760 kilos of these crustaceans were held illegally, without the slightest authorization paper. Around 260 other kilos were accompanied by invoices, but were not salable, given that this activity had not been declared to the authorities.
-This seizure does not, however, come as a surprise to Fabio Coentrao. The Portuguese had, in fact, already been called to order by the Authority for Food and Economic Security (ASAE), which had invited him to close his business. The ex-Real Madrid star, from a fishing family and owner of four boats, clearly would have had better time respecting the law.
