After qualifying for the third round of the Australian Open for the first time in her young career, Leylah Annie Fernandez takes on one of the toughest challenges on Friday in Melbourne.
The Quebecer will face the third seed, the American Coco Cauff, on the sixth day of competition in Melbourne.
In facing Gauff, Fernandez will have in front of her a player undefeated in seven matches to start the 2025 calendar.
Fernandez, 22, and Gauff, 20, faced each other at the United Cup on December 29, and the American won decisively, 6-3, 6-2.
-Without necessarily being impressive, Gauff won her first two matches in Australia without dropping a set: the first 6-3, 6-3 against her compatriot Sofia Kenin, the second 6-3, 7-5 against the British Jodie Burrage .
For her part, Fernandez (30th) started her fortnight by defeating the Ukrainian Yulia Starodubtseva 7-5, 6-4, before coming back up the slope to defeat the Spaniard Cristina Bucșa in her second outing.
