How were the Hawks going to compensate for the significant absences – De’Andre Hunter, Larry Nance Jr. and Jalen Johnson – to face Phoenix? The question arises logically since the three players weigh almost 49 points on average this season. Trae Young had a simple answer: by doing more than usual.

“I can’t ask others to do more when some are failing and not do it for myself, not wanting to do more. So I decided to take my part”declares the Hawks playmaker.

The result? 43 points in Atlanta’s success. It was not perfect (13/31 shooting, 6 lost balls) because Trae Young, ill, was not completely 100%, but it is his season record. Made at the best of times, when the Hawks needed more points from him.

No matter how many passes, as long as there is victory

“I didn’t feel well on Monday, and again on Tuesday morning, but I was able to rest by staying in bed all day, so maybe that helped.”says the All-Star, who adds 5 assists and 3 interceptions.

If it is his best outing of the season in scoring, it is on the other hand his weakest (tied with a match in Charlotte on November 30) in passing. The league’s best passer was far from his average, but circumstances dictated his play and performance against the Suns.

“I’m not going to make 12 assists every night. Some nights I’ll give 20, then others only 5, and that’s fine as long as we win.”he concludes.
