is not spared from courtside incivility. Shouts, insults and even attacks are increasing in amateur basketball. The basketball committee reacts strongly: the matches on January 18 and 19 will be played behind closed doors in the department.

This is an increasingly common situation on weekends. While their children play their basketball game on the field, the parents also invite themselves, but to play another game: insulting, insulting and even threatening the referees and volunteers at the scorer’s table.
Incivility is increasing and the Gironde departmental basketball committee reacts. “32% of disciplinary cases are caused by inappropriate behavior in the stands, particularly by parents”he warns. As a result, he has just made an unusual decision: on January 18 and 19, the matches will be played behind closed doors, in front of empty stands.

“I had an incident at Chartrons during the match and I had to file a file with the disciplinary committee.” Harassed in the middle of a match by a father who had placed himself at her level to comment on all her actions, this very young referee who remains anonymous, has the impression of having already seen a lot. “I already have two files with the disciplinary committee”she explains.
Still a high school student, she nevertheless does not let herself be impressed, and knows how to take a step back from the situation

What is surprising is that I have already seen almost every situation, even though I have only been refereeing since September.

She, who refuses to let the insults affect her, recognizes it: “What can make me feel bad is the public leaving their zone during the match.” Too many parents refuse to remain in their place of mere spectator.

Cécile Costa is the mother of two children, who have chosen basketball. Her eldest daughter referees matches in her free time, she started with small clubs in June. A situation which does not reassure Cécile Costa.
She, who has played tennis at a high level and refereed matches nationally and internationally, is appalled by the behavior at basketball matches. She also blames the parents, “often in the small categories from U11 to U15”. “Instead of complaining and going out, they go directly to the referee. I have seen parents go onto the field at quarter-time and half-time and go to the referee,” deplores the mother. My daughter was even followed off the field after the match.”
As an example, she cites the insults shouted at her 15-year-old daughter during a match involving players aged under 13.

You need to stop refereeing, you really suck!

At the Lormont basketball club, the president, Jonathan Deswarte, has observed increasing violence for eight years. The club manager, who goes so far as to speak of “scourge” and acceleration over the last four years, mainly deplores the behavior of the parents of young players. Like Célia Costa, he observes incivility mainly during matches involving young minors. He particularly targets certain fathers.

“After a bad refereeing decision, bad coaching or playing time not given to the child, the dad will attack the referee or the volunteers,” he regrets. Jonathan Deswarte, however, considers himself extremely lucky to have had the right volunteers, at the right times, to manage real difficulties in the stands.

“We experienced these situations of incivility, we managed them, he says. I’ve already had volunteers call law enforcement.” Hence the importance for them to have acquired sufficient experience and temperament.
To prevent situations from degenerating and anticipate excesses as best as possible, the President has made a habit at the start of each season of warning parents of the risks of fines for incivility on the sidelines. A little speech which, according to him, cools the ardor.

Contagious violence

Discouraged, many volunteers are missing and are not there to remind parents of the rules. And those who replace them in a hurry to fill gaps in meetings are less well trained. This is how tension spreads, explains the club President. And this situation is not getting better, quite the contrary.

An analysis shared by Cécilia Costa, who herself abandoned her commitment to the scorer’s table and to managing a match room. The last time she volunteered her hours for the club, the coach was putting pressure on his girls throughout the match, and with me, he lost his temper”, she remembers. Too often, these coaches, also volunteers, do not set a good example.

Instead of being offensive, they will be aggressive.

A week to think about incivility

It is in this idea “let everyone think about the subject”that the president of the Gironde basketball committee organized this weekend’s punch operation, but also a whole week of awareness, for the attention of the 13,500 members of the department.
“Over the first three months of competition, we saw a sharp increase in incivility in numbers and slightly more significant incidents, such as an invasion of the pitch,” detailed Jean-Paul Dubos, president of the departmental committee.

These facts remain minor, but are increasing sharply.

“What has always made a basketball hall special is that there is an atmosphere”insists the head of the departmental commission, hoping that it will not tarnish.

This weekend, the Bouscat club must play a match away to . “It was complicated to tell parents, you bring your kids and then you stay outside.”explains Gilles Gombeau, president of the club. To avoid volunteer parents waiting in the car, after having organized the trip, they will be the only ones allowed in the stands.

We still allow three parents to return.

Because as the club president explains, “sIf you fill three cars, you have the whole team.In fact, the competition does not stop with this measure, taken above all to make an impression.
