Standard didn’t want it, it won in Charleroi

Despite the defeat against Union, a Charleroi player had good reasons to be happy on Saturday. Young winger Quentin Benaerts is determined to establish himself in the first team. With the suspension of Perfect Guiagon and Antoine Bernier, he could well have a new opportunity on Friday evening in Ghent, an opportunity that he intends to seize with ambition and determination.

Despite the difficult context of Saturday evening, marked by the interruption of the match and the comeback of Union Saint-Gilloise, coach Rik De Mil took the gamble of throwing Quentin into the fray. The latter took the place of Alexis Flips at the end of the match, thanks to his ability to deliver precise crosses, an essential asset in the tactical system revised to counter the opponent. “We were losing, and the coach asked me to contribute offensively by crossing for Daan Heymans and Nikola Stulic. I think I fulfilled my mission well, even if it was not enough to change the score,” he explains in Sudinfo.

The Waremmien’s performances this season have not failed to impress. Integrated into the first team for four recent matches (Standard, OHL, Cercle Bruges, Kortrijk), it was against the Union that his baptism of fire finally took place. “Since my arrival in Charleroi, everything has accelerated this season. I was not destined to join the pro group, but my efforts in training and my good performances changed the situation. I was waiting for these first minutes and they finally came, even if the end result is a disappointment. »

In Charleroi since 2019

Trained at Standard before going through Stade Waremmien and Wanze-Bas-Oha, Quentin Benaets joined Charleroi in 2019. Under the leadership of Abder Ramdane then Frank Defays, he continued to progress with the U23s in D1 ACFF. During the pre-season training camp, he was able to attract the attention of Rik De Mil, who appreciated his qualities. “Quentin works hard every day. He showed that he could bring something to the group. That’s why I gave him a chance and I hope he continues on this path,” explained the coach.

It was at Mambourg that he reached an important milestone, a rare moment for young people from the Academy. “There was adrenaline, but as soon as I stepped on the field, I knew what I had to do. I felt good. » A memorable memory despite the defeat and a major step in the career of this promising player.
