“Stellantis will now focus more on hybrid” (and therefore less on electric?)

“Stellantis will now focus more on hybrid” (and therefore less on electric?)

The 2035 deadline is still there, but sales of EVs (electric vehicles) are not looking good. They are stagnating and have fallen in 2024 as much as the overall market, to summarize. So Jean-Philippe Imparatonew director of Stellantis for Europe, since the departure of Carlos Tavares on December 1, made announcements as part of the Brussels 2025 trade fairwhich the editorial team has obviously covered for you.

And one of them may surprise you. While compliance with CAFE objectives (limitations of average CO2 emissions from manufacturers' ranges) is increasingly difficult (81 g per vehicle sold on average in 2025, compared to 95 g until 2024), and it would be necessary sell more and more electric vehicles to achieve this, Jean-Philippe Imparato declared that one of the priority objectives for 2025 was to “increase the number of hybrid versions on models of all [ses] marques“.

Thus, but we have already seen it since the start of 2024, all the models already presented in electric will also be offered in hybrid, since the Stellantis, multi-energy platforms allow it (the STLA). This is already the case for the Peugeot 208, the 2008, the Opel Corsa, more recently for the C3, the new 3008 or the Jeep Avenger. And this will be the case for the Alfa Romeo Junior or the restyled Citroën C4.

And it's surprising because for example, a 208 hybrid emits between 101 and 104 g of CO2/km, compared to 0 obviously for the electric version. And well above the limit of 81 g on average set for 2025…

But bonuses for selling EVs

That said, the Europe director also communicated on other measures. Thus, new instructions have been given to the network of each brand in the group, and bonuses on sales objectives will be granted if salespeople manage to place EVs with their customers, to help achieve CAFE objectives.

A real paradox, these two announcements… The second being more logical than the first, and it will be helped by the launch of the new ë:C3, the electric Fiat Grande Panda or the Alfa Romeo Junior…

Finally, last announcement, but we suspected it a little: the Chinese brand Leapmotor, of which Stellantis has taken control of 20% of the capital (and 51% of the capital of a new joint venture Leapmotor International), will position itself as a frontal competitor for entry-level electric models. And that was a strategy of his predecessor Carlos Tavares: to partner with a Chinese manufacturer, rather than being passively “eaten” by them…
