“Rose Season”, or the place of women in sport

What is it about?

The story takes place in the suburbs, in Rosigny-sur-Seine. We follow the Roses de Rosigny women’s football team, and in particular Barbara, the captain. This season, the girls are working hard to qualify for the National. It was then that the President of the club, due to lack of budget, decided to forfeit the women’s section to “bet” on the boys.

Why read this book?

In Season of Roses, the author highlights the monopoly that men constantly have in sport. As the club president says “We have to bet on them, they are the future of the club”. Faced with this injustice, Barbara unites her team in rebellion: why should we submit and accept our fate in silence? No, what she is proposing is to organize a girls versus boys match, to decide between the best and then establish a vote.
The author also gives us the initial values of football. The Roses team indeed appears to be united, and it is precisely from their cohesion that their strength stems. As a reader, we quickly realize that the women’s team is much more talented than the boys’ team; However, the simple fact of being born in a woman’s body makes their sporting career more winding.
Are girls weaker in football by nature? No, they just remain disadvantaged by a patriarchal system that hinders them and supports boys in their overconfidence.
The issue of women’s sport is essential, and although less taboo, the injustices persist. Barbara confesses to Bilal and tells him “They don’t take us girls seriously”. For Bilal, football is “just a sport” and yet he can participate in the National. For Barbara, football represents much more, a reason for living that drives her every day, despite not being able to revise her baccalaureate.
Furthermore, drawing pleasantly accompanies reading accessible to all. Light, it transports us both to the world of deals and to a sky of many colors. Through the sequence of boards, the author manages to transcribe the movement of bodies, and the spontaneity of sport. We have the impression of being both the pitch on which the players walk, and the euphoria of the spectator during the final match.

“It’s easy for you, everything is already thought out for your National season, like, normal. Whereas we have to wait in silence, as if we were less legitimate. It’s not fair. »
