The Sixers were thinking big for the construction of their new venue in the city center, a project costing $1.3 billion whose construction was to begin shortly. After a long battle with residents of Chinatown and Washington Square, opposed to this initiative, the Philadelphia franchise received the green light from the city council on December 19, by 12 votes to 5, in order to launch work on the room. which should have been called “76 Place”. Because in the end, the project planned for delivery in 2031 will not happen.

The Philadelphia Inquirer has in fact revealed that members of the council confirmed that the Sixers had finally chosen to abandon this project, yielding to pressure from residents of neighboring neighborhoods who multiplied appeals and petitions. If the franchise has not yet made any comments on the subject, the Pennsylvania daily added that the iconic Philly team had reached an agreement with “Comcast Spectacor”, which manages the operation of the Wells Fargo Center, to stay south of the city, while waiting to set up a new project, near South Philly, where the Sixers are currently based.

New Jersey back in the race?

Against all odds, the city’s municipal council and Mayor Cherelle Parker had nevertheless supported and defended the construction of this enclosure which was to promote the city of brotherly love and boost the economy of the city center. The Sixers’ decision to slow down is therefore having a hard time getting through to the municipal council, as one of its members, Jamie Gauthier, lamented.

“It is clear that we should never have trusted this process. This development proves that the project was half-finished,” she declared. “They don’t respect us, they don’t respect the municipal council, they don’t respect the mayor, they don’t respect the citizens, and that’s why they should never have made things like this easier for them from the start “.

After a long two-year battle, the Sixers are now starting from scratch and perhaps a move to New Jersey, where the franchise has its facilities and offices, will become relevant again…
