Race leader Charlie Dalin (Macif) was less than 500 miles from the finish in Les Sables d’Olonne.
The final sprint has begun. Leader of the Vendée Globe, Charlie Dalin (Macif) was less than 500 miles (926 km) from the finish in Les Sables d’Olonne, at 7 p.m. on Sunday, with 145 miles ahead of his first pursuer. Launched in pursuit from Cape Horn, the Varois Yoann Richomme (Paprec Arkéa) was stagnating at a distance from the Norman, now expected early Tuesday morning on the line for the 10th solo round the world trip, non-stop and without assistance.
The two leaders are heading straight for the Bay of Biscay, well off Cape Finisterre (northwest of Spain), with Richomme following a route a little further east than Dalin. On Monday, they will approach the Breton coast in a lighter wind, depending on the race direction.
“For the moment, both are following the routings at approximately the same speed,” explains Hubert Lemonnier, race director. Yoann is perhaps on a slightly more direct route but the difference is minimal. What we can say, however, is that their route really seems optimal!” The duo of leaders and Sébastien Simon, 3rd, will be joined this night in the northern hemisphere by a new group of skippers, led by Sam Goodchild and Jérémie Beyou, who should however take another ten days to arrive.
