Malkin has missed his team’s last four games. Head coach Mike Sullivan said before Sunday’s duel between the Penguins and the Lightning that the maneuver allowed the team to reinsert forward Philip Tomasino into its lineup.

Sullivan added that Malkin’s health is being assessed on a daily basis.

Malkin had played in the Penguins’ previous 209 games before going down in action this week. He registered his 500e goal and 1300e point in the NHL earlier this season and has amassed eight goals and 24 assists in 41 games since the start of the campaign.

Sullivan also indicated Sunday that forward Michael Bunting was involved in a traffic accident in the vicinity of PPG Paints Arena before Sunday’s game against the Lightning. Sullivan said Bunting was OK, even though he didn’t play against the Lightning.

In 43 games this season, Bunting has 13 goals and 12 assists.
