The German Alexander Zverev won against the Frenchman Lucas Pouille, in 3 sets, to advance to the second round.

World No.2 Alexander Zverev was patient on Sunday to dismiss Frenchman Lucas Pouille (103rd) in three sets in the first round of the Australian Open.

Still in search of a first Grand Slam title at 27, the German won 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in just over 2h20 against an eye-catching opponent, a semi-finalist in Melbourne in 2019 but whose career has since been hampered by injuries.

During this last match of the day on Sunday at the Rod Laver Arena, Pouille was quickly broken by his opponent in the first set but did not give up, saving a total of fifteen break points on the entire match.

In the next round, Zverev will face the Spaniard Pedro Martinez (44th), who led 6-3, 4-1 in the first round when he benefited from the abandonment of Luciano Darderi (45th).

The German’s main rivals for the title in Melbourne, world No.1 Jannik Sinner, Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz (3rd) and ten-time winner in Melbourne Novak Djokovic (7th) will enter the fray on Monday.
