Patrick Kluivert has been named coach of the Indonesian team, succeeding Shin Taeyong, who was sacked earlier this week, the Indonesian Federation (PSSI) announced on Wednesday.

The former Dutch player, who notably played for Ajax Amsterdam and FC Barcelona during his exceptional career, was coach of Curaçao from 2015 to 2016. It was to date his only experience at the head of a selection, even if he was also assistant to the Netherlands and Cameroon teams.

“The PSSI has officially appointed Patrick Kluivert as coach of the Indonesian national team,” the PSSI published on its official website. “The Dutch coach has signed a two-year contract, from 2025 to 2027, with an option to extend the contract. »

Kluivert will be supported on the bench by his compatriots Alex Pastoor and Denny Landzaat. The three men are expected to be presented to the public on Sunday January 12.

Tim Garuda has not participated in the final phase of a World Cup since 1938, at the time as the Dutch East Indies. They currently occupy third place in Group C of the AFC 26™ World Cup qualifiers, one point behind Australia who occupy the second direct qualifying spot. Kluivert’s first match will be against the Socceroos on March 20 in Sydney, before hosting Bahrain in Jakarta five days later.
