This is perhaps the last support that Zinédine Zidane was missing to settle on the bench of the France team in 2026, he who is already announced as the big favorite. Public opinion is indeed pushing hard to see him take over. An Odoxa survey, carried out for Winamax and RTL, reveals that 65% of French people want Zinédine Zidane to succeed Didier Deschamps as coach of the France team. This preference comes in a context where Deschamps, who announced that he would leave his post after the 2026 World Cup, leaves a positive image with the French. 83% of them appreciate the current coach, whom they consider competent, unifying, exemplary and friendly. His authority, although shared, is seen as a key factor in his success.
71% of football fans want Zidane
However, despite the recognition of Deschamps’ work, 62% of French people believe that his departure is a good thing. The coach’s mandate, which will extend over 14 years, is starting to show signs of wear and tear, in particular due to the game sometimes considered unpleasant by the Blues. Only 62% of French people and 57% of football fans believe that his game is pleasant to watch.
Thus, the time seems to have come for a renewal at the head of the team, and Zidane appears to be the natural successor. 65% of respondents name the ex-captain of the Blues as the next coach, a rate which rises to 71% among football fans. Behind him, names like Thierry Henry, Arsène Wenger and Laurent Blanc are mentioned, but none seem to rival the popularity of Zidane, whose return to the helm of the Blues now seems inevitable.
