The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the winner of the eighth edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), which will be held from February 1 to 28, will receive a considerable sum of $3.5 million, or more than 2 billion CFA francs. This announcement follows a significant increase in financial rewards allocated to this competition. This is what the APS reported.
The total allocation for this CHAN, planned for Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, now stands at $10.4 million, marking an increase of 32%. CAF President Patrice Motsepe underlined the importance of this financial increase, announcing a 75% increase only for the winner. He said this competition plays a crucial role in the development of African players and contributes to the global competitiveness of African football.
Mr. Motsepe said CHAN is part of a broader investment strategy to make African football more attractive. He added that this is an initiative aimed at attracting football fans, television viewers, as well as investors and partners across the world. The APS also relayed these comments, emphasizing the scale of this approach.
The draw for participating teams is scheduled to take place on January 15 in Nairobi, Kenya. Of the 18 qualified teams, Senegal, defending champion, is one of the nations ready to compete in this competition. Besides the three host countries, countries like Morocco, Guinea, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, among others, are also registered for the tournament. The decision of the last qualified country among those in the CECAFA zone, between Burundi, Ethiopia and South Sudan, remains to be finalized.
