Victim of a very heavy fall during training in Bormio on December 27, Cyprien Sarrazin's state of health was of concern after having been operated on for an intracranial hematoma. Repatriated this Friday to Lyon, the French team doctor took stock this Saturday morning and confirmed that the Haut-Alpine “is doing well”.
A week after his violent fall in BormioCyprien Sarrazin was finally able to leave Italy to be repatriated this Friday to Lyon, to the neurosurgery department of Médipôle. On this occasion Stéphane Bulle, the doctor of the French team, returned to the state of health of the Haut-Alpin this Saturday morning during a video conference: “We are going to attack with the rehabilitation neurosurgeons. We are going to start allowing him to do the things that everyone does, namely sit on the edge of a bed, eat properly, stand up (…) In a certain future, we will try to transfer him to the Henry-Gabrielle hospital in the south of Lyon, in a follow-up care and rehabilitation department because that is probably where he will be best cared for for rehabilitation. »
“It’s a pathology that is relatively serious”
The FFS doctor therefore recalled what happened following his violent fall: “He was immediately transported to Sondalo by helicopter, where an acute subdural hematoma was very quickly diagnosed. So, it's a hematoma inside the skull. This hematoma quickly worsened and led to what is called compression. In agreement with the neurosurgeons, we made a burr hole. That is to say, we make a hole in the skull, we apply suction to empty the blood inside the hematoma. It is a pathology which is relatively serious. We are not dealing with a knee at all. This is something that will take us on a certain period of recovery. He is very tired, he really has a hard time communicating anymore. When you come out of this coma period, you're really exhausted, and it's very complicated to have even a normal life, a normal flow of language. »
« We will put everything in place so that he comes back”
Reassuring news concerning the skier from Dévoluy: “Today, he is doing well. He still has a little trouble opening his eyes because, you may have heard, he suffers from diplopia. That is to say that the reflexes which coordinate your two eyes are a little disturbed following the hyperpressure in the skull. As your two eyes are no longer completely coordinated, you have this double vision that sets in. These are things that can be re-educated. We will have to work on this in the coming weeks. »
Obviously, his season is already over. Cyprien Sarrazin will therefore begin a recovery period over several months before being able to hope for a possible return to competition: “An assessment in the days to come concerning the cognitive problems which has not yet been done. (…) We will put everything in place so that he comes back. I will be there to support him and the entire federal system will be there to support him in getting back to skiing. I have absolutely no idea where this is going to take us. I can't tell you. But anyway, that's our goal. »
