Euro: Switzerland welcomes Europe

Seventeen years after co-organizing the Euro with Austria, Switzerland is hosting the best football nations, women’s version. From July 2 to 27, eight cities will be at the heart of the event: Geneva, Sion, Bern, Basel, Thun, Lucerne, Zurich and St. Gallen. UEFA aims to sell all the tickets, or 700,000 tickets.

The football party will be sumptuous. The Swiss team has everything in hand to shine and make an impression. The coach’s troop Pia Sundhage will play its group matches against Norway, Iceland and Finland. Lia Wälti, Alisha Lehmann or even Naomi Luyet will have the public behind them. Enough to make them grow wings? Caution remains in order.

A disproportionate Club World Cup

The Club World Cup will impress the world of football. The controversial competition which will take place from June 14 to July 13 in the United States is one of all superlatives. Even if the figures are not official, it is rumored that the competition will distribute 2.5 billion dollars (around 2.25 billion francs) to the 32 teams entered. Among them are Manchester City, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, PSG, Benfica, Fluminense, Boca Juniors, Miami. Each participant is handpicked according to precise criteria (continental champions, international rankings, etc.). The teams will receive 50 million dollars (45 million francs) for their participation, the winner should receive 100 million dollars.

The streaming platform DAZN acquired the rights for a sum of one billion dollars (900 million francs) and has undertaken to broadcast the 63 matches for free. Critics were heard, notably from Ballon d’Or Rodri who noted the infernal density of the calendar. Another concern: this competition bites into the Women’s Euro which will be played partly on the same dates.

The gym festival in Lausanne

The youth closing ceremony is in full swing on the occasion of the Federal Gymnastics Festival 2019 in Aarau on Sunday, June 16, 2019 in Schachen in Aarau. The Federal Gymnastics Festival in Aarau lasts from June 13th to June 23rd, 2019. (KEYSTONE/Urs Flueeler)

The Federal Gymnastics Festival is the largest event organized in Switzerland. This monumental event takes place every six years. It will host for the 77e times no less than 70,000 athletes came from all over the country. It is quite rare to point out that a majority of women will make up this tide of gymnasts which will pour into the Olympic capital, from June 12 to 22.

But to see what? The program is as rich as it is varied. There will of course be the great classics like athletics and gymnastics (rhythmic, apparatus, artistic, acrobatic, etc.). More surprising: the parkour, indiaca (a sort of large badminton shuttlecock) or waterings (rings on water) events. The expected 300,000 spectators will be able to watch 22 disciplines.

The athletes’ performances will represent the equivalent of eight months of competition, over seven days of competition. Thus, the 2,300 companies present will compete on 48 sites in Lausanne. In total, 140 competitions will be rated by 4000 judges. And we haven’t even talked about the party under the canteens!

Odermatt leads the way in Saalbach

The Austrian station of Saalbach will organize the Alpine Ski World Championships from February 4 to 16. An air of deja vu? The White Circus had already set up its big top there in 1991. Thirty-four years later, we still remember the exploits of the Swiss skiers. Our world champions were Franz Heinzer (downhill), Vreni Schneider (slalom) and Chantal Bournissen (combined). The Austrians made a strong impression by winning five titles for a total of eleven medals (six podiums for the Swiss).

This year, the white cross delegation will have serious arguments to make. For several seasons, she has outplayed the Austrians. Marco Odermatt, Loïc Meillard, Lara Gut-Behrami, Camille Rast will all have chances of gold medals. Behind, we can expect to see some nice surprises. Like Franjo von Allmen or Justin Murisier in the first place. Two years ago, Switzerland won seven medals, including three gold.

Hockey: finally the year of Switzerland?

To its credit, the Swiss team has eight bronze medals at the Ice Hockey World Championship. On four occasions (1935, 2013, 2018 and 2024), it was adorned with silver. But it has never managed to join in the ranks of winners Canada (28 titles), Russia (27 including the USSR), the Czech Republic (13 including Czechoslovakia), Sweden (11), Finland (4 ), the United States (2), Great Britain (1) and Slovakia (1).

Will this be a good year for Patrick Fischer’s troupe? Last year in Prague, she was unable to do anything against Boston Bruins winger David Pastrnak and his compatriots. In their den, the Czechs showed unfailing solidity. The Swiss spearheads of the NHL, Fiala, Josi, Niederreiter, Siegenthaler, Hischier, Kurashev, were silent on the evening of the final lost 2-0.

Dependent on its mercenaries from across the Atlantic, will Fischer’s troop regain its cohesion, its play and its pleasure on the ice of Herning (Denmark) and Stockholm (Sweden)from May 9? The final will be played on May 25 at the Avicii Arena in Stockholm.

The Jordans of tomorrow at the Vaudoise arena

The best basketball juniors on the planet will make the floor of the Vaudoise arena shine. The Under-19 World Cup stops in Lausanne from June 28 to July 6. The United States, Canada, France, Serbia and Switzerland are among the sixteen teams involved. It is the third most important tournament, after the men’s and women’s Worlds.

Big names in basketball have participated in this competition in the past. Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curryspecialist in three-point baskets, has been there. Just like Gasol (ex-Lakers and Bulls), Nicolas Batum (LA Clippers) or Victor Wembanyama (Spurs).

The main hall of the Vaudoise arena will be used in this regard, as will the training rink. Social and cultural activities will be organized on site and in town. As for spectators of the age of the competitors and younger (born in 2006 and after), they will be able to freely attend the matches, before the quarter-finals, by ordering a free ticket (necessary), from March.
