Mathieu van der Poel, injured in his ribs, has given up on taking the start on Wednesday of the GP Nys in Baal, the 5th event of the X20 Cyclocross Trophy in Belgium, announced his team Alpecin-Deceunink.
The world champion suffers from “significant pain in his ribs”, the result of his collision against a pole during the Loenhout cyclo-cross last Friday.
“The discomfort has gotten worse in recent days,” his team explained. After consulting the medical team this morning, Mathieu made the difficult decision not to start today. We will closely monitor his recovery to determine whether he will be able to participate in the Koksijde cross country the day after tomorrow (Friday, editor’s note).”
The cyclocross world champion won the five events in which he took part this season (Zonhoven, Mol, Gavere, Loenhout and Besançon).
His domination of the discipline is such that it makes him the huge favorite for the World Championships in Liévin, at the beginning of February in France, where he intends to equal the record for world titles (7) held by the Belgian Eric De Vlaeminck.
